What Are Carbohydrates And How Many Do We Need?

Do you know how many carbohydrates you should you eat?

There was a time when people viewed carbohydrates as the worst thing you could ingest. Remember the Atkins Diet craze, when people were encouraged to eat meat and avoid as many carbohydrates as possible?

Those days are gone. Today, people realize that carbohydrates are important for a healthy body. The problem is when people get too many of their calories from carbohydrates.

The best forms of carbohydrates come from cereals, pastas, whole-grain breads, nuts, legumes, vegetables and fruits. The bad form of carbohydrates comes from sugary sodas, fatty pastries, greasy potato chips and other packaged snacks. Fast-food is also a haven for the bad type of carbohydrates.

If you eat too much of the bad kind of carbohydrates you’re putting yourself at risk for serious health problems. For one thing, you increase the odds that you’ll gain weight. Secondly, you can put yourself at risk for heart disease and other ailments that come with carrying around too much weight on a daily basis.

Controlling your carbohydrate intake isn’t overly difficult. It just requires a bit of common sense. It also requires that you be smart about your diet.

Eat a healthy, balanced diet, one that’s rich in dark leafy vegetables and citrus fruits. This will make sure that you avoid eating too many of the bad carbohydrates. It’s much like anything else: Carbohydrates are fine if eaten in moderation.

But if you ingest too many carbohydrates, you’re only asking for weight gain and the health problems that result from it.

So take it easy with these food types – moderation is the key!
